LOTUSat-1, Vietnam’s inaugural indigenous weather satellite, is slated for launch between December 2024 and February 2025 as per the Vietnam National Satellite Centre (VNSC) of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST). The 570kg satellite, boasting a high-resolution one-meter image capability, is expected to be completed by May and can capture images under any weather conditions.
The ground control system is set to be ready by September at Hoa Lac hi-tech park. The satellite project, a collaboration between VNSC and Japan’s Sumitomo Corp., is funded by ODA loans from JICA, including technology transfer and training to bolster local capabilities. This development follows the successful operation of Vietnam’s first remote sensing satellite, VNREDSat-1, since 2013, which has aided in various national resource management and planning tasks.
