A delegation of representatives from US technology firms including Intel, Qualcomm, Infineon, and Synopsys met with Vietnamese officials to discuss the potential of Vietnam’s semiconductor industry. The Vietnamese Minister of Information and Communications, Nguyen Manh Hung, highlighted the country’s strong inclination towards STEM subjects, which he believes aligns with the requirements of the semiconductor industry. Vietnam currently has about 6,000 workers in chip design, with 85% working for foreign companies.
The country aims to increase job generation and technological mastery in microchip development through a national semiconductor industry strategy. John Neuffeur, president of the US Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA), expressed appreciation for Vietnam’s clear and committed strategy towards semiconductor industry development. He suggested that Vietnam’s significant number of ICT students could help alleviate the global semiconductor industry’s workforce shortage and urged the Vietnamese government to support university research and development to nurture more skilled professionals for the industry.
